Allegro speed train between Helsinki and St Petersburg in 2010

The new fast speed train connection between Helsinki and St Petersburg will be called Allegro. The new trains’ top speed will be 220 kilometers an hour and the journey will take at least two hours less than now.

The goal is to first shorten the journey to three and a half hours and then further to three hours instead of the current five and a half hours. The number of passengers between Helsinki and St Petersburg is expected to triple in five years from opening the new fast route.

To start with, there will be three daily shifts and later one more shift to both directions will be added. In addition to new craft, also investment in railroads will be required. All border formalities bust be sorted in the train without stopping.
